Facility Manager


The role and opportunity

AgResearch is looking for an enthusiastic and dedicated Animal Facilities Manager to join our Infrastructure team. This is a full-time, permanent position based at our Agresearch Grasslands (Palmerston North) campus and reports to the Site Operations Manager.


This is an exciting opportunity for a seasoned People Leader interested in quality science and groundbreaking research to join our innovative organisation. The role works closely with scientists, research partners, animal ethics, internal and external stakeholders, and the Site Operations Manager.  


What will you be doing

The Animal Facility Manager is primarily responsible for managing the facility used to accommodate animals undergoing biological research by AgResearch for developing products and technologies that meet global consumer needs in a safe, ethical and animal-friendly manner.  Research areas include nutritional and metabolic research, forage improvement research, animal health including infectious diseases and parasitology research, and methane research targeting reducing emissions. You will provide efficient operation of the Animal Handling Facility at the Grasslands Campus, including oversight and management of staff, animals, buildings within the Facility, transitional and containment facilities, and the management of the field lab area. This position also has the scope for the right person to grow in the role to support and act as second in charge to the Site Operations Manager. You will:


  • Provide effective leadership that fosters and encourages a high performing team
  • Deliver quality solutions that align with best practice while pro-actively identifying ongoing opportunities and supporting continuous improvement
  • Actively manage the facility resources for optimum delivery of science projects, including planning and scheduling of multiple research projects
  • Ensuring compliance with relevant biosecurity, animal welfare & ethics, and company requirements for a containment facility at all times, including maintaining accurate documentation and reporting on the operation of all aspects of the Animal Facility
  • Ensure appropriate animals are sourced and available for timely and efficient service
  • Support the Site Operations Manager as required


Your ideal background

We want an exceptional people leader to run our facility effectively, to support and encourgage high performance of our Animal Facilities team.We can provide training and support regarding the animal ethics and compliance aspect of the role for the right candidate, previous experience is this area is not necessary.


  • A Bachelor’s degree in science, business management, commerce, agriculture, or other related area is desirable
  • Proven people leadership experience
  • Ability to build & maintain a high performing team
  • Excellent communication skills to engage with all stakeholders
  • Empathy, interest and understanding of science and science principles
  • Understanding of commercial and financial principles; service delivery, costs, profits, and margins
  • Previous experience in facilities/property management is advantageous but not essential
  • A keen attitude and motivation to work in an innovative environment
  • Ability to work autonomously while being part of a collaborative team
  • Demonstrates safe workplace behaviour by taking all practicable steps to ensure own and other’s safety in the workplace
