Assistant Laboratory Technician

The Role and Opportunity

 AgResearch is seeking a dedicated Assistant Laboratory Technician to join us on a part-time, permanent basis (approx. 10 hrs/wk). Based at our Grasslands Campus in Palmerston North, you will be responsible for performing day-to-day research tests and scientific methods to assist in implementing and completing research projects and experiments.

This entry-level position performs assignments designed to develop professional work knowledge and abilities. The incumbent of this role will be expected to perform a range of routine tasks according to established procedures, instructions, and methods. This role is more manual in nature than a technical nature.

The Science Field/Science Project related to this position researches greenhouse gas emission mitigation research and will support Rumen Microbiology Teams by contributing basic laboratory support, ensuring continuity of workflow. The Assistant Lab Technician will carry out routine tasks and duties associated with projects to assist the wider research team in the preparation and completion of experiments.

What You will be Doing

 You will perform a range of routine tasks according to established procedures, instructions, and methods; this role is more manual in nature than a technical nature.  You will be working on projects researching greenhouse gas emission mitigation and supporting Rumen Microbiology Teams by contributing basic laboratory support and ensuring continuity of their work flow. You will be responsible for:

  • Maintaining consumables and general lab supplies in a tidy, organized manner
  • Washing & sterilisng glassware to laboratory standards
  • Preparingbacterial culture media by following protocols
  • Preparing  bottles and tubes for culturing
  • Following protocols for disposal of laboratory waste.
  • Following protocols for sterilizing glassware, tips etc.

Your Ideal Background

While prior experience would be an advantage in this role, we have the capacity to provide full training and support to the right candidate. Ideally we are looking for:

  • Relevant Secondary Qualification
  • Experience working in an environment that requires an understanding of Health & Safety requirements when handling potentially hazardous materials and substances
  • Background knowledge in basic research practices would be excellent but not essential
  • Proficient computer skills with knowledge of Microsoft and Excel
  • Experience with safe and effective use of chemicals
  • An eye for detail and stamina to complete repetitive and routine tasks to a high degree of quality is essential
  • A keen attitude and motivation to work in an innovative environment
  • Ability to work autonomously while being part of a collaborative team
  • Demonstrates safe workplace behaviour by taking all practicable steps to ensure own and other’s safety in the workplace
