The role and opportunity
AgResearch is seeking a dedicated Kaitūhono, Māori Partnerships Specialist to join us in a full-time, permanent basis. This position is based in the North Island, with a preference for Ruakura, Hamilton. However for the right candidate we would also consider Grasslands, Palmerston North.
This is an exciting opportunity for someone looking to help us embed Te Ao Māori at AgResearch through Te Ara Tika. As Kaitūhono, you’ll support the Māori Research & Partnerships plan by fostering strong, long-term research connections with Māori organisations and communities. Guided by the Māori Research & Partnerships Leader, you’ll collaborate with Kairangahau to establish Māori-led, Māori-centred, and Kaupapa Māori research.
In this role you will work with Māori partners, AgResearch researchers, and funding agencies to secure contracts for the delivery of research that advance partner aspirations. Additionally, you’ll help science teams integrate Te Ao Māori into their research and engagement approaches.

What you will be doing
- Working collaboratively with external Māori partners and AgResearch scientists to co-develop research proposals and facilitate delivery of projects that help our partners move towards their aspirations and create value for the pastoral sector and New Zealand.
- Strengthening relationships and identifying opportunities for our Māori partners while connecting with AgResearch science teams to understand their capabilities and ability to work effectively with Māori partners.

Your ideal background
- Experience in relationship management, including ability to build effective networks internally and externally.
- Experience working in the primary sector or related industry or science-based organisation.
- Experience and knowledge of tikanga Māori and te reo Māori to facilitate relationship building and to effectively present information to different Māori groups.
- Understanding of the primary production sector and rural community issues and impacts including Māori Agribusiness and whenua Māori.
- Experience of applying a range of generalist and specialist skills including relationship management, business development and contracting to deliver a range of functions.
- Understanding the Crown's obligations to Māori under the Treaty of Waitangi and other statutes as they relate to natural resources.
- Sound understanding of the primary sector innovation and industry-development context.
