Mō te Pakihi | About the Company:

As part of the Government’s reset of the science, innovation and technology system, on 1 July 2025, AgResearch, Manaaki Whenua – Landcare Research, Plant & Food Research, and Scion merged to form the New Zealand Institute for Bioeconomy Science, trading as the Bioeconomy Science Institute.

This merger has created a world-class research organisation of globally significant size and scale, with over 2,000 employees — including scientists, researchers, and support staff. It brings together fundamental science knowledge and expertise in the natural resources that underpin the bioeconomy and the native estate, alongside applied research capabilities in manufacturing, agritech and biotech, and the food and fibre sectors.

Our people drive innovation and commercial outcomes in the bioeconomy, using research and technology to support enduring economic growth and resilience, a healthy environment, and positive social outcomes for Aotearoa New Zealand.

This position sits under the current AgResearch group of the Bioeconomy Science Institute.

Kōrero mō te tūranga | About the role

Are you an experienced and motivated farm professional who thrives in a collaborative environment and enjoys planning for success?

We are seeking a Research Farm Manager for our Lincoln Farm, to lead the day-to-day operation of one of our key research farms — supporting science teams, small seed production, and integrated livestock management — while maintaining the highest standards of performance, safety, and compliance.

This is a people-centred role where relationship management, coordination, and teamwork are just as important as technical farming skills. You’ll work closely with scientists, technicians, and operational colleagues to turn research plans into practical, on-farm outcomes. As the Lincoln Research Farm Manager, you’ll take a proactive and strategic approach to planning and delivering all on-farm activities.  Working together with Science Leads, external stake holders and the National Farm Operations Manager, you’ll coordinate cropping schedules, trial support, and livestock activities to meet research and production goals.

Your success will come from clear communication, careful planning, and strong partnerships — ensuring farm operations align seamlessly with research priorities. You’ll champion health, safety, and wellbeing, foster teamwork, and create a workplace where collaboration drives success.

.

  • Manage and implement financial and feed budgets.
  • Partner with science and research teams to plan and deliver trials and production activities accurately and on time.
  • Coordinate small seed and arable crop production from planning through to harvest.
  • Lead operational planning around crop rotation, soil health, and irrigation management.
  • Maintain robust systems for chemical use, compliance, and record keeping.
  • Build and manage strong working relationships with employees, contractors, and research partners.
  • Promote and model best practice in Health, Safety, and Wellbeing.
  • Oversee small livestock component (sheep and cattle) as part of an integrated research system.

Ōpūmanawa | About you

You’re a practical, organised, and relationship-focused professional who values accuracy and collaboration. You take pride in building strong connections with colleagues and scientists, planning, and ensuring that every detail supports the success of the wider team.

To be successful, you’ll have:

  • Proven experience in small seed or arable crop management (research or commercial).
  • A Diploma or Degree in Agriculture, Agronomy, or equivalent experience.
  • People management experience (preferable) along with strong planning, coordination, and communication skills.
  • Sound knowledge of irrigation, chemical use, and compliance systems.
  • Practical livestock management experience (sheep and/or cattle).
  • GROWSAFE or Certified Handler qualification (or willingness to obtain).
