Summer Student Intern – Genomic Characterisation of Sheep Immune Function Using Targeted Long-Read Sequencing

Understanding the genetic basis of disease resistance in livestock is critical for improving animal health, productivity, and resilience. This project will develop a targeted long-read sequencing panel to investigate immunocompetence in sheep by identifying key immune-related genes and genomic regions associated with disease resistance. Using sheep pangenome resources and genomic databases, the project will design a sequencing panel capable of detecting both single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) and complex structural variants that may influence health traits. The internship offers a unique opportunity to work at the intersection of livestock genetics, genomics, bioinformatics, and advanced sequencing technologies.

What you will be doing | Ngā whāinga matua

 

  • Review scientific literature and genomic resources to identify candidate immune-related genes and genomic regions associated with sheep health and disease resistance.
  • Analyse sheep pangenome datasets to investigate genetic diversity and prioritise targets for panel development.
  • Design and assess capture probes for targeted long-read sequencing of SNPs and structural variants.
  • Perform bioinformatic analyses to validate target regions, assess probe performance, and interpret sequencing data.
  • Assist with laboratory workflows including DNA quality assessment, library preparation, sequencing panel testing, and reporting of findings.
  • Learn from experienced researchers in a collaborative scientific environment.

To be successful in this role, the minimum qualifications required are:

 

  • Currently enrolled in, or recently completed, an undergraduate degree in genetics, genomics, bioinformatics, molecular biology, biotechnology, immunology, animal science, computer science, or a related field.
  • An interest in livestock genomics, genetics, animal health, bioinformatics, immunology, or biotechnology.
  • Strong analytical skills and attention to detail.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively within a research team.
  • Good written and verbal communication skills.
  • Motivation to learn new laboratory and research techniques.
